The Scot discussed his team selection before Leeds' derby win over Huddersfield Town.
Leeds United head coach Steve Evans says he started Giuseppe Bellusci over Sol Bamba during Saturday afternoon's Yorkshire derby as the Italian had simply earned his place in the side with a strong performance against Cardiff, according to Sky Sports.
Indeed, Bellusci replaced the suspended Bamba against Cardiff City but the 26-year-old Italian ended up playing so well against the Bluebirds that the Leeds skipper was demoted to the bench when he returned.
Evans told Sky Sports before the Huddersfield clash: "I’ve come in and I’ve told the players you play on merit. It’s different to how it was at this club, that’s why there’s been a coaching change.
"Giuseppe came in and took his chance, that’s why Sol returns on the bench."
Evans' decision appeared to pay off. Bamba was forced into action early on when he replaced the injured Liam Cooper and the Ivorian looked much sharper than in recent weeks.
The Leeds captain has been in poor form lately but was previously known for being a rock at the back.
One particular challenge stood out against Huddersfield as the 30-year-old looked like the Bamba of old.
Evans appears to be getting the best out of Bellusci for now, then, while a return to form for Bamba would be quite handy. Especially if Cooper remains injured for the Whites during and beyond the international break.
