Stoke City defeated Chelsea 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium.
The Potters headed into the clash looking to build on last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Newcastle United whereas Chelsea were looking to avoid a third straight league defeat.
For long spells it appeared like the Blues were going to make the breakthrough but Stoke stood firm, defending stoutly before Marko Arnautovic acrobatically opened the scoring on 52 minutes.
The remaining 35 minutes was a real teste of Stoke’s resolve as the visitors came on strong, yet the hosts held out and condemned Mourinho’s side to a seventh league defeat of the season.
Writing on Twitter after the game, Etherington felt Mark Hughes’ side were excellent and reserved special praise for defensive midfielder Glenn Whelan for another superb display.
Whelan, 31, is arguably playing the best football of his career to date as continues to impress.
Against Chelsea, he contributed with two tackles, three interceptions and six effective clearances as he, alongside Erik Pieters, really stood out from a defensive perspective.
The Republic of Ireland international has a busy week ahead of him, what with the European Championship playoffs, and Hughes will be hopeful he doesn’t pick up an injury.
Stoke’s victory sees them climb up to 12th in the table, just one point shy of Everton in 8th.
