David James and Steve Harper react on Twitter to Newcastle goalkeeper's heroics

The 29-year-old Newcastle goalkeeper has been the subject of heavy praise on social media.

David James and Steve Harper were left in awe of Rob Elliot on Saturday afternoon.

Indeed, the Newcastle United shot stopper was a fitness doubt ahead of his side's trip to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon but ended up starting - and thriving - for the Magpies.

Steve McClaren put his faith in the 29-year-old and he duly delivered.

Bournemouth dominated proceedings against Newcastle and the visitors were largely condemned for a 'woeful' performance.

But a stunning display from Elliot, allayed with a winner from Ayoze Perez, ensured all three points for the away side at Bournemouth.

And former goalkeeper James took to Twitter to laud Elliot, diverting criticism away from Bournemouth's play in the final third.

Ex-Newcastle shot stopper Harper also took to social media, joking about playing well being overrated and picking Elliot out as his man of the match.

The goalkeeper's masterclass is a timely one considering the fact McClaren's men will be without injured no.1 Tim Krul for quite some time.

The rest of the Newcastle side will have to improve in future, though, especially against stronger opposition.
