Confirmed Sunderland v Southampton line-ups: Watmore starts, Defoe dropped

Sunderland take on Southampton at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

Sunderland are looking to bounce back from a thumping 6-2 defeat at Everton last weekend when they take on Southampton today.

The Black Cats have won just one of their three games under new manager Sam Allardyce, and that came against North East rivals Newcastle.

Today, Allardyce has handed a start to 21-year-old winger Duncan Watmore, who has impressed as a substitute recently, with Jermain Defoe dropping out of the side despite his goal against Everton last week.

Steven Fletcher leads the line today, whilst Allardyce has a host of experienced Premier League players on the bench in Defoe, Wes Brown, Fabio Borini and Jack Rodwell, giving him plenty of options should he need them.

Meanwhile, Southampton have won their last two games in all competitions after 2-1 and 2-0 wins over Aston Villa and Bournemouth respectively, with Ronald Koeman looking to make it a hat-trick of victories.

The Saints make the long trip up north with a virtually full-strength side, though Maya Yoshida comes in to defence in place of Cedric Soares.

Midfielder Victor Wanyama misses out through suspension having been sent off against Bournemouth last weekend, meaning James Ward-Prowse comes in to midfield in his place.

Young striker Ryan Seager is handed a place on the bench, as are summer signings Steven Caulker, Oriol Romeu and Juanmi, as Southampton search for another victory this afternoon.
