Newcastle United youngster Kevin Mbabu has told the Chronicle that he is now in a position where he has always wanted to be.
Mbabu has had to bide his time in pursuit of first-team opportunities at St. James’ Park, but now he is in the senior set-up he is loving life.
Mbabu has been handed a chance in Premier League matches against Chelsea and Manchester City this season, and he impressed in both games, with the youngster now a fully established member of the senior side.
And the full-back said: “It was really good. The head coach gave me my chance and I took it.
“This is always where I have wanted to be, in the first-team squad of a Premier League club.
“That’s what I am getting at the moment.
“I am enjoying every day I spend with the first team.”
Unfortunately for Mbabu, soon after he broke into the Magpies’ starting line-up, he picked up an injury which curtailed his progress.
He is still obviously pleased with his start to the campaign though, and it seems that his tally of three appearances could increase by the end of the season.
The 20-year-old has not looked overawed with any challenge that he has been thrown at him so far.
Mbabu’s energy and desire carried him through against Chelsea and City, and although Newcastle’s defensive options have increased, with a number of players returning to fitness, he remains a good option for Steve McClaren’s side.
