Derby County boss Paul Clement names three defenders who could replace Craig Forsyth

Derby County head coach Paul Clement believes the loan market won’t be necessary with Max Lowe, Chris Baird and Stephen Warnock at his disposal.

On Thursday, Derby County head coach Paul Clement revealed to the Derby Telegraph that influential left-back Craig Forsyth would be out for the season with ligament damage.

The news would have come as a huge blow to the Championship high-flyers, just one day before they look to beat their East Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest and go to the top of the Championship.

Nevertheless, despite the defender’s importance to the team, Clement dismissed the need to look to the loan market and named Chris Baird, Stephen Warnock and Max Lowe as three players who could cover him in his absence.

Asked about the possibility of looking to the loan market, Clement told the Derby Telegraph: "We think we have got good cover at left-back; We have a former England international in Stephen Warnock.

"We have a young and upcoming talent in Max Lowe, an England Youth international who is not tried and tested at this level but is a player of great potential.

"We also have Chris Baird, who can play in that position and is another international player. “

Should Clement look to bring someone in to replace Forsyth?

Although it wouldn’t be too difficult for Clement to bring in a player of high quality to replace Forsyth, it sends out a strong message to the three players already in the squad.

Warnock and Baird are both experienced defenders, with international level experience, so it would have seemed needless for Clement to hit the panic button and bring someone in without giving them the chance to prove themselves first.

Nevertheless, the biggest boost of all will go to Lowe, who will now believe he has a real chance of a first-team opportunity.

After earning a reputation in the Rams’ academy as a potential future England player, it would be exciting to see the 18-year-old given the chance in the Championship in the near future.

He will need to get back to full fitness first, however, it does seem somewhat realistic that he will now get the chance to make his first-team debut before the turn of the year.
