Steve Evans praises Leeds United's Mirco Antenucci and Chris Wood for their performances against Cardiff City

Leeds United beat Cardiff City 1-0 at Elland Road on Tuesday night to pick up their first home win of the season.

Leeds United manager Steve Evans has told Radio Yorkshire that he felt Mirco Antenucci and Chris Wood were both excellent against Cardiff City.

Although neither of the strike duo managed to get on the score-sheet in Leeds’ 1-0 win, they still caused the Bluebirds’ defence a number of problems.

And Evans was pleased with the way that they combined, with the manager reserving particular praise for Antenucci’s work-rate.

“I thought the front two were exceptional,” he enthused. “I thought they caused real problems.

“Antenucci was magnificent. He covered every blade of grass and would be very tired at the end.”

Antenucci has been one of the biggest beneficiaries from Evans’ appointment at Elland Road.

The Italian striker has come back into starting contention as a result of Evans’ arrival at the Yorkshire club, because of the former Rotherham United boss’ switch to 4-4-2.

Antenucci and Wood’s pairing is still developing, but Tuesday night’s display against Cardiff was arguably their most promising to date.

Leeds' win over Cardiff was their first at home all season, and it has lifted them up to 17th place in the Championship table, six points clear of the relegation zone and nine adrift of the play-off places.
