The duo were highly impressive in the 6-2 demolition of Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.
The two strikers are good friends off the pitch, and that relationship has aided them on the field as they have developed a deadly partnership this season.
That was evident in Sunday’s 6-2 demolition of Sunderland as the duo linked up for two of the Ivorian’s three goals on the afternoon.
And Martinez says the understanding they have will be key for the Toffees over the coming weeks and months.
“Their relationship is vital,” he told evertonfc.co.uk.
“Sometimes it has been the other way round – Arouna grabbed their attention and Rom has had a bit more space. The understanding that they have between them has been important.”
The Blues boss was particularly keen to praise Lukaku, saying that one of his assists against the Black Cats shows the quality he has in his game.
The Belgian was in fine form at the weekend as he left the pitch with a goal and two assists to his name, the second of those a wonderful cross with the outside of his boot to give Kone the chance to head home his third.
It was an excellent piece of skill from the forward, and Martinez was one of many that was impressed, saying you don’t expect a number nine to have that quality.
“The assist shows that Rom has got that quality,” he added.
“It’s one thing seeing the pass, but another to execute it with the outside of his foot. To do it with that precision is quite impressive. You don’t expect a typical number nine to have that quality to do that.”
