This summer Aston Villa lost the spine of their team. Striker Christian Benteke made a switch to Liverpool whilst midfielder Fabian Delph eventually decided that he did want an exit from the club, joining Manchester City. Then there was Dutch international Ron Vlaar.
A star for The Netherlands at the World Cup in 2014 he struggled for fitness and form with the club last season and considering his high wages no deal could be met to keep the player after his contract expired at the end of last season.
Now Vlaar remains out of contract and without a club after undergoing knee surgery on a long-standing meniscus problem this summer.
He is currently stepping up his recovery at first club AZ Alkmaar but it looks like he could have an offer on the table very soon, according to reports in Italy.
The Biancolesti have lost fellow Dutchman Stefan de Vrij for up to four months after he underwent knee surgery of his own and are sporting director Igli Tare has reportedly identified Vlaar as the perfect free agent replacement.
Of course any deal would depend on exactly how fit Vlaar has got in his brief training stint at AZ but it would certainly be a positive move for the veteran if he managed to secure a move to Serie A.
