Steve Evans explains regular Bellusci meetings, jokes about language barrier

The Leeds head coach has been in constant contact with the Italian.

Leeds United head coach Steve Evans has revealed centre-back Giuseppe Bellusci has held regular meetings with him about his place in the side, according to BBC Radio Leeds.

The 26-year-old started - and shone - for Leeds as United beat Cardiff City 1-0 on Tuesday night.

But Bellusci has been far from in favour recently following some woeful form at Elland Road.

Evans, though, has been in constant contact with the Italian - but joked that the pair don't speak that much due to the language barrier.

Evans told BBC Radio Leeds: "I knew I was going to play Bellusci because the big man [captain Sol Bamba] was out [suspended]. He's come to see me on a regular basis. We don't speak that much because I don't speak Italian!"

Bamba may have been suspended but playing the 26-year-old was still far from an automatic call considering the criticism he received after United's 3-0 loss to Middlesbrough.

Indeed, Noel Whelan branded Bellusci 'shambolic' and said he isn't good enough to play for Leeds.

But the Italian drew heavy praise from all quarters after a surprise clean sheet for the Whites against Cardiff, especially in the absence of their captain.

Perhaps the Ivorian won't be an automatic selection this weekend, considering his form has been below par of late, too.

Next up for Leeds is a trip to Huddersfield during the Championship’s early kick-off on Saturday afternoon.
