The Magpies looked to bounce back from their disappointing derby defeat Sunderland by overcoming Mark Hughes’ hardworking Stoke City side at St. James’ Park.
The hosts dominated proceedings yet couldn’t find the breakthrough as goalkeeper Jack Butland pulled off a number of great saves for the Potters to keep the scoreline locked at 0-0.
Newcastle’s frustrations can be illustrated by Ayoze Perez’s contributions, as the 22-year-old was influential throughout and created a host of goal scoring opportunities for his side.

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, aside from topping the creative charts, Perez also featured among the best when it came to whipping in accurate crosses.
The Spanish ace posted a joint-league high five accurate crosses, a stat which will delight boss Steve McClaren but also irritate him as Newcastle’s strikers couldn’t profit from his superb delivery.
One team which did profit from a number of superb deliveries, however, was Watford as they defeated West Ham United 2-0 at Vicarage Road.
Central midfielder Ben Watson also posted five accurate crosses this weekend, though his deliveries were mainly from dead-ball situations rather than terrific wing-play.
Still, the former Wigan man contributed greatly to side’s victory and further proved how he can still play at the very top level despite having turned 30 and only featured sparingly thus far.
The Hornets' victory took them up to 11th in the table, nine points clear of Newcastle in 18th.
