The 20-year-old playmaker struggled to make an impact during Monday night's 3-1 defeat at White Hart Lane.
New manager Remi Garde was watching on from the stands at White Hart Lane after being confirmed as Tim Sherwood’s successor a few hours earlier, but he was left under no illusions about the task facing him when Moussa Dembele gave the hosts the lead just two minutes into the match.
Delle Alli later doubled Tottenham’s advantage just before the break, and while Jordan Ayew’s 80th-minute strike gave Villa some hope of a comeback, a late Harry Kane finish kept the visitors bottom of the table with just four points from 11 games.
Caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald went with a 4-2-3-1 formation to begin the match, with Jack Grealish starting in the hole behind Gabby Agbonlahor, but the 20-year-old playmaker proceeded to endure the latest in a recent line of disappointing outings.

Tasked with pulling the strings from the middle, the academy product failed to offer the creative spark that was showcased during last season’s run-in, and after seeming increasingly sluggish as the second half wore on, he was eventually replaced by Carles Gil with 25 minutes left.
Villa immediately looked like a much more dangerous side with the diminutive Spaniard on the pitch, and given how Grealish has been struggling for form since arguably September’s 1-0 Capital One Cup win over Birmingham City, plenty of fans on Twitter were soon calling for him to be dropped for his fellow No. 10.
Here is a sampling of how the claret and blue faithful reacted to his subpar showing:
Seeing more and more from Ayew every week. Needs to be starting with Gil. grealish needs a rest #avfc— Frem (@TheRealFrem) November 2, 2015
30 seconds on the pitch and creates more than grealish Did for 60 minutes #avfc— tomdalziel (@Tom_Dalziel) November 2, 2015
Grealish has been terrible this half. He looks like he's got a pout on that Sherwood got the sack. No work rate. No positivity. #avfc— Alex Middleton (@alexYYC) November 2, 2015
Don't see what Grealish brings at present. Would much rather Gil was in the team #avfc— Greg Martin (@gjdmartin) November 2, 2015
Feel sorry for grealish. Been very poor again but been hung out to dry. Too much too soon. #avfc— Adam whitehouse (@Adamw1985) November 2, 2015
Grealish still looks heart broken from Timmy getting the sack......lackluster at best #avfc— Daniel Collins (@Dan_Collinss) November 2, 2015
Has Grealish been over hyped or what????? Just NOT seeing it... #avfc— Frem (@TheRealFrem) November 2, 2015
All this hype over Grealish, I think I've only seen him have 3 good games #avfc— Karl Fisher (@karlosavfc) November 2, 2015
Pretty sure Grealish will have to up the anti big time to play regular under Garde. #avfc— Roger. W (@RogW38) November 2, 2015
Grealish was sulking since the first half. Needs to be more professional if he wants an England call up. #AVFC— Aidan Butler (@AidanJohnButler) November 2, 2015
On that performance Grealish might not get in Garde's team #avfc— Billy Moloney (@moloneybilly) November 2, 2015
I know he's only young but am I the only one who thinks Grealish is a bit slow to see a pass? Sometimes seems a yard off the pace #avfc— Carl Baker (@BakesAvfc) November 2, 2015
Gil does more in the first 15 seconds he's been on that Grealish did in 65 minutes. #avfc— Alex Middleton (@alexYYC) November 2, 2015
Neck on the block, Grealish won't make it. Too lightweight and luxury. Attitude reminds me of Bannan when it all went wrong for him #avfc— Mike Fielding (@MikeFielding) November 2, 2015
Grealish was a passenger tonight. More often than not he is a luxury we cannot afford. Give me Gill any day #AVFC— CJ Fitz (@cjfitz84) November 2, 2015
If not both, then Carlos Gil should start ahead of Jack Grealish for Me. Spurs not even playing well, but beating us comfortable #avfc— AdaM (@adamov_) November 2, 2015
Much better since Gil came on for that poser Grealish #avfc— Yng Burt Reynolds. (@yngburtreynolds) November 2, 2015
Carles Gill is a little gem.. Needs to be starting over Grealish every time #AVFC— Quoc Nguyen (@QN1981) November 2, 2015
Carles Gil has changed the game for us, and in my opinion much better than Grealish at the moment ! #avfc— Connor (@CBlunt97) November 2, 2015
Grealish not the sort of player we can afford to carry. Gil offers so much more currently. Jack will have his time too #avfc— Stephen Maguire (@headofthetown) November 2, 2015
Most encouraging 20 minutes of the season. Gil gives much more energy than Grealish if it's one or the other. Played to our strengths #avfc— Mitchell Willis (@Mitch5947) November 2, 2015
Grealish was absolute muck too. He needs a swift kick in the balls to wake him up #avfc— Fran (@Goobledygook29) November 2, 2015
Grealish looking like he needs to be dropped. He's turning into Weimann. #avfc— Stay Golden (@stay_classy187) November 2, 2015
Grealish is a massive talent, but Gil is simply another level. Gil and Ayew should be first on XI in attack. #avfc— Christer (@Chrsmo) November 2, 2015
seriously think grealish should become an impact sub for the next few games, he seems to be really warn out #avfc— aimée. (@TeamGardner22) November 2, 2015
Hope Garde can see that Grealish isn't a starting player. Completely clueless without the ball at his feet. #avfc— Richard Armstrong (@armstronskis) November 2, 2015
