Toby Alderweireld on what Tottenham must not do against Aston Villa

The Belgian centre-back has called for complete focus.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has called on his team-mates to build on their impressive win over Bournemouth in tonight’s clash with Aston Villa and has given his assurances that they won’t be underestimating their struggling opponents.

The league’s last-placed club travel to White Hart Lane to face an in-form Spurs side and their newest Belgian star wants to ensure the efforts of last weekend are not wasted.

“You can’t play at 80% in the Premier League… Villa will win one day, so we have to be 100%,” said Alderweireld, in an interview on the club's website.

“No-one will underestimate Villa. Maybe they will have a new manager and they need to change things in the Premier League. It will be difficult but we’re confident in our ability and our quality to win that game.

“And at home, we want to get the three points in every game we play… It’s difficult to win away in the Premier League so you don’t to waste that by not winning at home now.”

The former Southampton man has been an ever-present for Mauricio Pochettino’s team this season and has been a major factor behind Tottenham’s much-improved defence.

Spurs boast the joint best defensive record in the Premier League, with eight goals conceded in their first ten games, and they will be eyeing another clean sheet tonight.

Villa are expected to announce the arrival of Remi Garde as their new manager imminently but he will be unable to affect proceedings tonight and Spurs will be hoping to capitalise on any uncertainty that presents itself.
