Steve Evans questions Leeds United squad; says he would have signed different players

The Leeds United boss is still awaiting his first win since taking charge at Elland Road.

Leeds United manager Steve Evans has been speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post ahead of his side’s Championship clash against Cardiff City on Tuesday evening, and the Whites boss has made a very interesting statement about the players currently at his disposal.

Evans has now been in charge for three games but in that time he has overseen two draws and a defeat to leave Leeds in 19th position in the second tier, just three points outside the relegation zone.

There is still plenty of football to come and Leeds have a lot of talented players in their squad, but speaking to YEP journalist Phil Hay, Evans admitted his current options are not all cut out for Championship football.

“I’d be telling a lie if I said the players in this squad fit playing for Leeds United in the Championship,” Evans is quoted as saying. “It would have been different players here if I’d been here in the summer.”

That is a bold statement and one wonders who exactly he means having now had plenty of time to run the rule over Leeds’ current playing squad.

With time to make more loan additions and the January transfer window drawing ever closer, Evans should soon have the opportunity to put that right; but if he does not, the rest of the season could go from bad to worse.
