Report: Newcastle ask for permission to make new signing, Victor Valdes targeted

Newcastle are allegedly fearing the worst over Rob Elliot.

According to the Shields Gazette, Newcastle are asking for special dispensation from The FA as they look to sign a new goalkeeper - specifically Manchester United's Victor Valdes.

The Magpies earned a 0-0 draw against Stoke City on Saturday, and whilst manager Steve McClaren will be disappointed to have not taken all three points, he has bigger issues on his hands right now.

First choice goalkeeper Tim Krul is out for the rest of the season, and his backup Karl Darlow is also on the treatment table at the moment, meaning Rob Elliot has had to come in to the side.

Now though, Elliot has also suffered an injury, leaving Newcastle with only 18-year-old rookie Freddie Woodman to rely on - and it seems that McClaren is keen to bring in a new stopper.

The Shields Gazette report that Newcastle will ask The FA for permission to bring in an emergency loan signing to strengthen their ranks in goal, and Manchester United's Victor Valdes is a top target.

The 33-year-old, who has won the Champions League and the World Cup during an illustrious career with Barcelona and the Spanish national team, has been frozen out at Old Trafford following a row with manager Louis van Gaal, meaning he is now fourth choice goalkeeper for the Red Devils.

A loan move to St. James' Park would suit all parties; United get him off their books, Valdes gets to play first-team football and Newcastle get a veteran goalkeeper who can come straight in to the side and solve their goalkeeping problems - but it all depends on whether The FA will sanction such a deal.
