Kevin MacDonald on what Aston Villa need to do to stay up

Aston Villa Sign

The Villains travel to White Hart Lane to face Spurs tonight (KO 20:00).

Aston Villa caretaker coach Kevin MacDonald has claimed his team need to perform to ‘top four’ standards if they are to avoid relegation this season.

The Villains have made a dreadful start to the campaign and sit rooted to the table, with just four points from their opening ten games.

A current six-game losing streak could extend to seven when MacDonald’s team take to the White Hart Lane pitch later tonight, and their stand-in boss knows a drastic turnaround in form is required.

“We almost have to play top four standard of football points-wise to get us out of the trouble we’re in,” said MacDonald, in quotes published by the Birmingham Mail.

“We’re in trouble. We’re not that naïve to think we’re not.

“But we think as a whole group within the club that we have better players than where we are at the moment.

Villa today announced the arrival of Frenchman Remi Garde as their new manager - via their official website - and he is due to be in attendance for tonight’s showdown.

Picking up anything from a flying Spurs side will be a tough ask but Villa will be hoping the Garde news is enough to give the team a lift.

The former Lyon boss will need to act fast if he is to save what has quickly become a desperate season for the West Midlands club, and time will tell if his left-field appointment was a masterstroke or costly mishap from the Villa board.
