Kevin Kilbane has criticised Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt on BBC Sport.
The former Sunderland star was not impressed with the performance of the 25-year-old left-back against Everton away from home at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
“I think Van Aanholt is a really good attacking player but, defensively, he is as poor a full-back or wing-back as I have seen in the Premier League,” Kilbane told BBC Sport.
“There is no way he is Allardyce's kind of defender, firstly because he switches off so often and also, when he is caught out of position, his recovery runs are poor because he does not recognise danger quickly enough.”
Van Aanholt, who has been on the books of Sunderland since 2014, has been in disappointing form so far this season.
The Netherlands international defender has created four chances in eight Premier League appearances so far this campaign.
The former Chelsea left-back has a pass accuracy of 81% and a shot accuracy of 25%, and has won two headers, 11 dribbles and 26 tackles.
Against Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, Van Aanholt took two shots, had a pass accuracy of 73%, created two chances, put in two crosses, won 67% of his tackles, and made three clearances and one block.
Sunderland are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with six points from 11 matches.
