Southampton is a perfect fit for me, says Virgil van Dijk

The defender was full of praise for manager Ronald Koeman, describing it as an honour to play for him.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has said that the club is a perfect fit for him.

The Dutch defender was brought in on the final day of the summer transfer window in a relatively big money move from Celtic.

He has made a strong start to his life in England with the Saints, making eight appearances so far and forming an impressive partnership with Jose Fonte in the heart of the defence.

His quick adaptation has helped to ease the loss of Toby Alderweireld in the summer, and he says one reason is that the club is a perfect fit for him.

“The club is a club with a lot of ambitions, it's a club going up and I think that suits me," he told saintsfc.co.uk.

"We have a lot of ambitions and we want to do better than last year. Even last year was, I think, a good year for Southampton, but that says a lot about what we think and what kind of mindset the team is.”

The defender was also full of praise for manager Ronald Koeman as he continues to enhance his reputation at St Mary’s.

The Dutch boss was highly impressive in his first season in charge and has seemingly continued that form into this season, with his side sitting seventh in the table after 11 game and just four points outside the Champions League places.

Indeed, there is strong speculation that the Dutch national team are keen to appoint Koeman as manager in future following their failure to reach Euro 2016, and Van Dijk says it’s an honour to play for him.

"It's a great honour to work for him,” he added.

“He was a fantastic player himself and he's managed also a lot of big clubs in Europe, so every day it's a learning day and it's an honour to work for him."
