Redknapp explains where Manchester United are going wrong with Anthony Martial

Jamie Redknapp says Louis van Gaal's use of Anthony Martial is hampering Manchester United.

Anthony Martial was supposed to be a solution for Manchester United's attacking problems, yet in recent games his performances have been blunted.

This has been by manager Louis van Gaal's decision to play him in wide areas, rather than through the middle, and the Red Devils are worse off for it.

Martial is getting touches of the ball, but in areas where it is harder to be effective. His goal against Liverpool on his debut where he collected the ball out wide, dribbled into the box and scored will always be remembered, but is hard to replicate on a consistent basis.

Against Palace he had just one shot at goal, and managed only five successful passes in the final third.

Former Premier League footballer Jamie Redknapp has told The Mail this is down to Van Gaal's defensive mindset, and a change of approach is required.

He said: "They were at their attacking best this season with Anthony Martial playing down the middle. But against Everton he was put out on the left to stop Seamus Coleman. Since when did Manchester United worry about stopping other teams?

"They are a team that should be taking the attack to the opposition. With Martial up front, United looked more fluid and attack-minded.

"That’s not to say he should replace Wayne Rooney — why can’t they play as a pair or with Rooney playing behind the Frenchman? However they do it, they need Martial’s pace back up top."

Manchester United's next home game is a home game against West Bromwich Albion. They have scored just one goal in their last four matches in all competitions, and failed to net at all in four of their last six games.

Wayne Rooney's form remains an enigma, and Martial's recent lack of goals is just as much a concern, and possibly a by product of the England international's poor form.
