The former Arsenal captain would be a gamble as the new manager at Villa Park.
The first choice appears to be Remi Garde. Aston Villa are very keen on the former Lyon boss but he is adamant on bringing his former assistants at Lyon with him, something Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas made clear yesterday that he would not be doing.
They have also been linked with Saint-Etienne boss Chistophe Galtier - so it seems Villa are looking at French options.
The club recruited a lot of French speaking players this summer and that would certainly hint at the reasons why Villa are so keen on a Francophone boss.
But forget Garde and Galtier - should Villa instead be looking at former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira?
The Manchester City youth coach is known to be looking for a first-team coaching opportunity and he is natural leader with a vast knowledge of the game and the Premier League.
Many would argue he would be yet another Sherwood appointment, inexperienced at this level and tactically inept.
However Vieira is widely considered to be a fantastic coach who has been tipped to one day take over at Arsenal. He has helped develop one of the best youth academies in the world at City and his appointment would generate a real buzz and excitement around Villa Park.
As things stand, Villa could not do much worse and Vieira might be worth the gamble.
