Maya Yoshida on the message Ronald Koeman keeps giving the Southampton squad

Southampton have progressed to the quarter-final of this season's Capital One Cup.

Maya Yoshida has told the Daily Mirror that Southampton boss Ronald Koeman is always telling them of the importance of cup competitions.

The Saints have made an impressive start to their Premier League campaign, but Koeman does not want to put all of his eggs in one basket.

Instead, the Dutch boss is keen for his side to compete in every competition they enter, and Yoshida says that winning the Capital One Cup is high on their list of priorities this season.

“The gaffer always speaks to us that the cup is very important as well as the Premier League campaign and also we think it is very important as well. It’s always good to get a title and I think we have a massive opportunity.”

Southampton are into the quarter-finals of the League Cup, after they dumped Aston Villa out of the competition on Tuesday night.

Yoshida and Graziano Pelle scored the goals which put the south coast club into the next round, and they are now just three wins away from lifting the trophy.

Southampton are scheduled to face Liverpool at St Mary's in the quarter-finals, meaning a tough task lies ahead for them if they are to progress any further.

That tie takes place of 2nd December, and Southampton will take heart from the 1-1 draw they picked up against Liverpool earlier this season.
