The former Scotland international has been concerened by the Magpies’ tendency to concede goals, and he feels that the players in their current squad are short of the standard required to solve their problems.
As a result, Nicholas feels that Newcastle will need additions in January – but he has tipped them to go down, alongside Bournemouth and Watford.
“For Newcastle, Steve McClaren needs to get to January and get at least two defenders as they look so exposed,” he said.
Newcastle have made an awful start to the campaign, and they currently lie in 19th place in the Premier League.
Their only victory this season came against Norwich City, but even in that match their defensive worries were evident.
Norwich could have had a hatful in the match, but were not ruthless enough and ultimately fell to a 6-2 defeat – with McClaren’s side’s attacking quality getting them out of trouble.
Newcastle have conceded 22 goals in their opening 10 matches this season, meaning that no Premier League side has conceded more than the North East outfit.
