In August it was reported that Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing up Ayoze Perez from Newcastle United. The Daily Mail reported that Tottenham were interested in signing the player from Newcastle for a fee of £15 million, after it became increasingly clear that Saido Berahino would not be making a move from West Bromwich Albion.
"Tottenham and especially Mauricio Pochettino were really interested, which is hugely flattering for me. At the end of the day nothing came of it because Newcastle considered me an important player and wouldn't let me leave."
Tottenham have been linked again in recent weeks with Manchester United also said to be keeping tabs on the former Tenerife striker - who has been one of the few shining lights at St James Park for the past 18 months.
It seems however that Ayoze Perez has made it clear that he is more than happy at Newcastle United. The Spaniard is quoted as telling The Chronicle:
“I felt I had a good season last year and it’s been good for me so far. I have scored some goals.
“Newcastle feels like home to me. Everybody at the club helps me and the fans are great.
“For a player that is the key.”
Tottenham and United are both in need of new strikers but Newcastle would be loath to let him leave the club in January.
He will surely prove a massive part of the team in what is looking like being yet another fight against relegation for the Toon this season.
So to hear him sound so confident of staying put must come as a big relief.
