Southampton fans react on Twitter to Gaston Ramirez’s performance v Aston Villa

Southampton defeated Aston Villa by a 2-1 scoreline on Wednesday.

Southampton secured their passage to the League Cup quarter final by defeating managerless Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The Saints secured the win thanks to goal from Maya Yoshida and Graziano Pelle, with Scott Sinclair’s injury time penalty coming too late for Villa to mount a comeback.

It was a tough fought game for the Saints, and it took longer to break the deadlock than many expected, but at the end Southampton’s quality shone threw, against the side who currently sit last in the Premier League table and sacked Tim Sherwood last weekend.

There was one surprise in the Southampton starting XI selected by Ronald Koeman, choosing to recall Gaston Ramirez for his first start since April 2014.

Ramirez came off the substitutes bench in the third round win over MK Dons, and made his first Premier League appearance of the season last weekend in the draw with Liverpool. The Uruguayn international set-up the equalising goal, and deserved a start against Villa.

He had an impact in the tie, registering the assist for Yoshida’s opening strike, and earned some praise at the end of his 68 minute appearance.

We collect some of the best responses to Ramirez’s first start for the Saints since April 2014, with Southampton fans sharing mixed views on his performance.
