Newcastle, Wolves fans give mixed reaction on Twitter after Williamson completes transfer

Newcastle defender Mike Williamson has joined Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Newcastle United have confirmed on their official website that centre back Mike Williamson has signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers on a one-month loan deal.

Williamson, 31, joined Newcastle back in January 2010 having struggled for first-team football with Portsmouth, and he has been a first-team regular ever since.

With over 150 appearances for the Magpies, Williamson has often partnered Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of the Newcastle defence - but this season, he has found himself out of favour.

The 6ft 4in centre back has been frozen out under Steve McClaren, and with his contract expiring at the end of the season, a departure has always seemed inevitable.

Now, the veteran defender has moved back down to the Championship, penning a one-month loan deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manager Kenny Jackett not only has a young defence at his disposal, but also has some injuries to contend with too - and the experience of Williamson will come in handy on both fronts.

Both sets of fans took to Twitter after the deal was announced, with Wolves fans largely happy with the deal, though some wanted a striker brought in first, and others rued the recent sale of Richard Stearman to Fulham.

Meanwhile, Williamson may not be the most popular of players at Newcastle, but Magpies fans were confused as to why he had been allowed to leave, given that Newcastle aren't blessed with a plethora of options in defence themselves.

Here are some of the reactions from Newcastle and Wolves fans after Williamson completed his loan move to Molineux earlier today...
