Report: Newcastle misfit Mike Williamson finally set for departure, Wolves deal imminent

Newcastle defender Mike Williamson is set to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to reports.

According to the Express and Star, Wolverhampton Wanderers are expected to sign Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson on Thursday.

Williamson, 31, has been a regular for Newcastle in recent years, making over 150 appearances for the club having signed from Portsmouth in January 2010.

Now though, the 6ft 4in centre back has become a forgotten man at St. James' Park, having been totally frozen out under new manager Steve McClaren.

A loan departure has seemed inevitably, and given that his contract on Tyneside will expire at the end of the season, he clearly has no future at Newcastle.

Now, the Express and Star report that Williamson is set to pen a one-month loan deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday as Kenny Jackett looks to strengthen his squad.

With injuries to defenders Kortney Hause, Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Dominic Iorfa, Williamson can bring some much-needed cover at the back for Wolves, who have lost each of their last three games.

Wiliamson will immediately become the oldest player in the Wolves squad, with Jackett seemingly desperate to add some experience to his squad to try and arrest the recent slide at Molineux.
