Louis van Gaal is reportedly keen on bringing Hakan Calhanoglu to Old Trafford, according to sources in Germany.
The report suggests Manchester United have already sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old midfielder in action for his current Bundesliga employers.
Calhanoglu will not come cheap, however, with the attacker currently contracted to Leverkusen until 2019.
Under the terms of that agreement, United will have to meet the €40 million (£29m) release clause that comes as part of that deal.
But it would appear that the Bundesliga side are willing to play ball, with managing director Michael Schade admitting as much during an interview with Sport Bild.
"We want to keep Hakan, but with us there is a pain threshold,” he said
The 21-year-old has scored 18 goals and provided a further 14 assists in 63 games to date for Leverkusen, including six goals and seven assists in the Champions League.
His signing would therefore represent a major coup for United, despite the substantial transfer fee involved.
