The former Sunderland boss is set to head to Greece.
His sacking has opened up some wounds at the club, with it clear he was not in sole charge of transfer dealings at the club.
Now a replacement is being sought and one name that has been thrown into the mix is former Sunderland boss Gustavo Poyet.
Poyet, who has also managed Brighton and Hove Albion, lost his job at Sunderland last season as the club began descending toward relegation.
He has been out of work since March and is believed to be keen on a return to management with Villa a great opportunity for the Uruguayan.
However, it looks like this might be a name to cross toff the list very shortly. Poyet is heading to Greece to have advanced talks with AEK Athens about taking over management at the club.
The Sunderland Echo claims that Poyet spoke to AEK over the weekend and is now set for further negotiations.
AEK are currently third in the Greek Super League after recovering from financial collapse and relegation last season under the guidance of club legend Traianos Dellas. He stepped down a week ago after a fall out with the board and a 4-0 loss to Olympiakos.
