The Toffees secured their passage to the next round of the League Cup by defeating Norwich on Tuesday evening, winning 4-3 on penalties.
This came at the end of extra-time, with both teams tied at 1-1, courtesy of goals from Sebastien Bassong and Leon Osman.
Roberto Martinez’s men are now in just their second League Cup quarter final in 27 years, and it was an impressive victory given the Canaries’ dominated possession and the shooting statistics.
Martinez decided to name a somewhat changed side for the tie, with one of the key changes coming in the goalkeeping department. Joel Robles was recalled to the side, making his third start in the League Cup, despite not having yet featured in the Premier League.
Whilst Tim Howard has come under some criticism for his league performances in recent weeks, Robles has yet to be given a chance to impress, but he certainly showed Martinez what he was about in the victory over Norwich.
He made a vital save from Lewis Grabban near the end of the game, as well as saving one of Norwich’s penalties, and Robles’ performance had many claiming after the game that he deserves a chance in the league now.
Following the end of the game, Everton fans took to Twitter to discuss Robles’ performance, praising his work in relation to Howard’s recent games.
@Everton Howard out! Robles In! Otherwise, Martinez Out!— Daniel Tatarsky (@GrassRootsMgr) October 28, 2015
@paddockpk3 spot on. Robles should be the no 1 choice and Howard stuck on the bench. It's Moyes and Neville all over again.— Debbie (@CarmellaBlue) October 28, 2015
If Robles gets dropped then something is wrong he's come in and done well made saves Howard would of not #Roblesnumber1— martin JFT96 nolan (@efcnolo) October 28, 2015
To coin a Mourinho phrase "weak and naive" that's what Martinez is. Despite Robles' heroics, Martinez hasn't got the balls to drop Howard.— Ann McGoldrick (@ann_mcgoldrick) October 28, 2015
@Everton If Robles does not keep his place we should sack Martinez. Howard Out!— Daniel Tatarsky (@GrassRootsMgr) October 28, 2015
Robles isnt long term answer but on form should be picked ahead of Howard as last night kept us in the game compared to Tim costing us games— YoungLee (@YoungLee1) October 28, 2015
Robles was out punching crosses, releasing the ball up field quickly and made saves that kept us in it, everything Howard doesn't do— Tommy Kealy (@bluetom77) October 28, 2015
The way Robles commands his area and actually communicates with his defenders makes me hate Tim Howard even more.— Neil Reid (@iamneilreid) October 28, 2015
Howard to start in goal on Sunday as the manager states... Sumat not right here with Robles not starting. What does the lad need to do?— Toffee Connoisseur (@SJM1878) October 28, 2015
How Martinez can justify starting Howard at the weekend after some of the saves Robles made last night is beyond me.— Phil Seddon (@phil_seddon) October 28, 2015
