Aston Villa are in action in the Capital One Cup this evening.
Last season Gary Gardner had a productive spell on loan at Nottingham Forest. He impressed during his time at the City Ground and it was hoped that he might be able to make a breakthrough into the Aston Villa first-team again this term.
The midfielder, younger brother of West Brom star Craig, unfortunately suffered an ankle injury in a pre-season friendly against Swindon Town this summer. That has kept him out of contention for the season so far.
At the start of the month he made his comeback for the under-21s, scoring a great goal in his first game back.
He has been training with the first-team recently trying to get to a position where he can push for selection or indeed head out on loan once again.
Today, ahead of Villa taking on Southampton in the Capital One Cup, he has tweeted this update on his official account. He also took the time to wish his team-mates all the best of luck for the game this evening:
It is therefore safe to assume that this fixture has come too soon for any involvement from the 22-year-old midfielder.
But it certainly seems that Gardner is on his way back into first-team action and soon enough, whether at Villa or out on loan, he will be playing some first-team football.
