London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea both had difficult nights up north in the Capital One Cup.
Arsenal were stunned by a confident performance from Sheffield Wednesday, who were unbeaten in their last seven Championship games heading into the match.
The Gunners were struck by early injuries to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and replacement Theo Walcott, and gave four youngsters their senior debuts in the match. It was not one to remember.
Match of the Day host Gary Lineker reacted with shock to Arsenal's loss, and mocked striker Olivier Giroud in the closing minutes.
Arsenal are getting a real stuffing from Wednesday.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 27, 2015
Just got a glimpse of Giroud. When did Wenger bring him on?— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 27, 2015
Well played Sheffield Wednesday. That was a blinding performance.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 27, 2015
The focus on Wednesday is right, for they were terrific and never let Arsenal look like scoring.
The Gunners did have young players like Ismael Bennacer making their debuts, but Giroud was a let down. He was starved of service, but never really offered a viable outlet or looked like creating anything himself.
Lineker also had words to add on Chelsea's struggle against Stoke, going 1-0 down to a Jon Walters goal before a last minute Loic Remy equaliser took the game to extra-time.
Jose can't even do it on a balmy, autumnal Tuesday night at Stoke.— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 27, 2015
Chelsea are back! An injury time equaliser at Stoke. Crisis over...— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) October 27, 2015
The crisis was not over though. Chelsea's misery continued as they lost on penalties, with under-fire star Eden Hazard missing the crucial spot kick.
