Nigel Pearson has been named as an outsider in contention for the Aston Villa boss, by The Guardian.
The former Leicester City boss is on a back-up short list alongside Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes, should their aim to appoint Remi Garde fail.
The Guardian report that Villa have already made an approach to Garde, who rejected the chance to take over at Newcastle United back in January.
Aston Villa fired Tim Sherwood on Sunday, a day after a 2-1 home defeat to Swansea City which sealed his fate.
The club are bottom of the Premier League and are seeking to appoint their third manager of 2015.
Pearson is listed by Oddschecker as fourth favourite for the Villa job, listed as short as 10/1 with some bookies, with Garde 1/5 on.
Leicester City fired Pearson in the summer, despite him leading the Foxes to survival in their first season back in the Premier League last season, and he has remained out of work since.
