James Collins backs West Ham to remain in Champions League places

West Ham Defence v Chelsea

The defender says confidence is high and the dressing room banter is the best he has ever seen it.

Speaking to the club’s official website, West Ham defender James Collins says they have the squad to remain in the Champions League places this season.

The Hammers are currently flying under Slaven Bilic this season, and find themselves in third place in the table on 20 points, just two points from first placed Manchester City.

It has been an impressive opening to the campaign, with their win over Chelsea on Saturday the latest defeat of one of last season’s top four, and Collins says they have the squad at their disposal to challenge for the top four this season.

“We have got the squad to do it. That’s the major thing. We’ve got competition for places in every position,” he told whufc.com.

“We struggled with a couple of injuries last year, which knocked us off track. But the squad this year has been improved so much that if we’re there, or there about, around Christmas, there’s no reason why we can’t sustain that and finish there.”

Confidence is naturally high at Upton Park given their fantastic start to the season, with the latest win sure to have only added to that.

They are now unbeaten in seven league outings, with five wins and two draws and enjoying a fine run of form despite the tough start to the season they were handed when the fixture lists were announced.

They enjoyed a similarly strong start last year but Collins says that the confidence this time around is the best he has seen it at the club during his time with them.

“We’re flying at the minute. The away win at Palace last week was a good building block for us,” he added.

“We took a lot of confidence from it and obviously knew it was going to be tough on Saturday, but I thought we were fantastic again. Confidence is massive at the club at the moment. Training's bang on, the banter in the dressing room is the best I’ve known it.”
