Hart raves about 'throwback' Leeds United under-21 striker Frank Mulhern

Could Frank Mulhern be in line for a first team shot at Leeds?

Leeds United head coach Steve Evans yesterday shot down claims Luciano Becchio could be in line for a return, telling the Yorkshire Evening Post links are unsubstantiated.

It remains the case that Leeds need competition and cover for Mirco Antenucci and Chris Wood up front, and one option is to look at the under-21 side.

The stand out player this season has been Irish striker Frank Mulhern, who has been scoring for fun, netting four goals in two games at the end of last month.

His efforts have impressed new academy boss Paul Hart, who has recently returned to the role he held back in the 90s, and believes Mulhern is a striker with near unique qualities in today's game.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: "He's a throwback. If you've seen the first half, his heading ability alone - which is unsual these days (impressed).

"I've been here six weeks, when I came here Frank was shy, reserved, inhibited. I took a shine to him after I spoke to him because he was on the fringes, he's listened and learned, and he has impressed me no end.

"He's come out of his shell on the pitch. He could be anything he wants to be."

Mulhern is only 18, and is a youth international for Republic of Ireland at under-21 level.

It is a huge ask to put a striker into the Championship and expect him to produce, but Mulhern has the attributes of a striker willing to put himself about and get stuck in.

Lee Erwin will return to the first team set up in a fortnight after his loan at Bury expires, but beyond that only Lewis Walters and Souleymane Doukara stand in Mulhern's path in terms of backing up Antenucci and Wood for a first team spot.
