The striker has not been in action in nearly a year.
Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce is keen to bring in some new options since taking over at the club and they have handed a trial to a player who could add some real pace to their attacking department.
The 29-year-old is currently a free agent after being released from his contract with Schalke 04 in Germany this summer.
He joined the Bundesliga side from Hoffenheim in 2012, where he had impressed. But his time in Gelsenkirchen was less than impressive. He scored just five times for Schalke in three-and-a-half years with the club, playing just 50 times after suffering with several injury problems.
Which makes you wonder what he might bring to the Black Cats?
The figures are clear. Obasi has played just 28 games in the past two seasons and has not played a competitive fixture since he featured for Schalke against SC Freiburg on the 8th November 2014 - nearly a year ago.
Even if he did impress at Sunderland during his trial spell when can a player who has not played in over a year really make an impact in the relegation battle.
Sunderland will have to consider that risk.
