The France international midfielder has never made any secret of his desire to play Champions League football, and in an interview with Get France Football back in September, the energetic Sissoko said that he could be tempted by a 'big four club'.
His powerful running and enthusiastic approach have endeared Sissoko to the Toon Army since he joined from Toulouse for a small fee in 2013, and his performances have since seen him become something of a regular in the France squad.
The 26-year-old was in impressive form for the Magpies as Steve McClaren’s wretched beginning to life at St James’ Park was truncated with a 6-2 hammering of Norwich City last Sunday, and ex-Arsenal star Merson was impressed with Sissoko’s display against the Canaries.
Merson is a big fan of Sissoko’s qualities, and the ex-Gunners playmaker has tipped the midfielder for progression up the Premier League ladder.
He told Soccer Saturday, broadcast on Sky Sports News on October 24: “He’s looked a very good player, but he sort of went off the boil a bit. He needs to keep up the good form because he doesn’t want to be one of the players that [is inconsistent] and is in and out.
“Newcastle is a big club, but if he keeps it up, he could play for one of the big, big boys in this division.”
Newcastle travel to their fierce local rivals Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby on Sunday looking to end a miserable run of form in the north-east clash.
The Magpies have lost their last five games against the Sunderland, despite the managerial revolving door that has existed at the Stadium of Light over the past few years.
