Rio Ferdinand and Shinji Kagawa were teammates at Manchester United, while Jurgen Klopp is the new Liverpool manager.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand said on the UEFA Champions League Highlights show on BT Sport Europe on Wednesday evening how Shinji Kagawa viewed Jurgen Klopp.

Japan international attacking midfielder Kagawa played under Klopp, now at Liverpool, at German club Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year-old joined Dortmund from Cerezo Osaka in the summer of 2010, and after two successful seasons in the Bundesliga moved to United in the summer of 2012.

Kagawa struggled to make an impact in the Premier League and returned to Dortmund in the summer of 2014.

Ferdinand, who played for the Red Devils from 2002 to 2014, has revealed what Kagawa thought of Klopp, who was appointed the Liverpool manager earlier this month.

“When Shinji Kagawa came to Old Trafford, I was very interested to find out about him (Klopp),” Ferdinand said on the UEFA Champions League Highlights show on BT Sport Europe on Wednesday evening.

“He said that he was very intense and he demanded a lot of running in the game, a lot of pressing. He really loved him, he was almost like a father-figure.”

Liverpool are 10th in the Premier League table at the moment with 13 points from nine matches, just four points behind fourth-place West Ham United.

The Merseyside outfit will take on Southampton at Anfield in the league on Sunday.
