This summer it was reported that Newcastle United could have made a move for Derby County defender Richard Keogh. Under the management of Steve McClaren at the iPro Stadium the Republic of Ireland international was a key member of the team and it looked like a move would be on the way.
However that deal never happened and Newcastle went into the season with just Chancel Mbemba improving the defence.
That has clearly not been enough and it is now reported that Newcastle might go back in for the Irishman this winter to help shore up a shaky defence.
It is reported in Shoot that Newcastle could be keen on signing the player for a fee in the region of £4 million in January.
The move would not however be likely to placate the Newcastle fans. The club need improvements at full-back as well as central defence and they would feel a 29-year-old from the Championship is not adequate to improve the club's woes at the back.
