The Magpies will take on Sunderland away from home at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Sunday.
Former Newcastle defender Beresford believes that Steve McClaren’s side have made a disappointing start to the season, but he is confident that they will pick up at least a point from this weekend’s derby.
“It’s been a nightmare start,” the 49-year-old told Sunderland’s official website. “The good thing about Newcastle though is the result against Norwich was massive.
“Not only did they need to win but with them winning well it means they go into this game a lot more confident than they would’ve been.
“Newcastle’s record in the last few derbies has been horrendous but I’m confident that Newcastle will come away with a result.”
“People will think I’m sitting on the fence, but I think it’ll be 1-1,” added Beresford.
Newcastle will head into Sunday’s Wear-Tyne derby on the back of a 6-2 victory over Norwich City at St. James’ Park.
It was the Magpies’ first win in the Premier League this season, and the players will be in buoyant mood.
Although Newcastle’s record in the derby in recent years has not been great, past results mean nothing. It is all about how the players perform on Sunday.
The Magpies are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with six points from nine matches, just two points behind 17th-place Bournemouth.
