Should Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have tried to sign Javier Hernandez from Manchester United in the summer?

Glenn Hoddle said on the UEFA Champions League Highlights show on BT Sport Europe on Tuesday evening that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur should have moved for Javier Hernandez in the summer.

Hernandez left Manchester United for German club Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window, having played on loan for Spanish giants Real Madrid last season.

“I think so (that it was a mistake from United to let him go)," said Tottenham legend Hoddle on the UEFA Champions League Highlights show on BT Sport Europe on Tuesday evening.

"When they let him go, they had a couple of strikers coming in. That was the reason he was going.

"For me, even Arsenal or Tottenham, who were looking for strikers at the time (should have moved for him).

"His movement is fantastic. If it doesn’t come off the first time, he is one of these that will go again, similar to Wrighty (Ian Wright)."

Hoddle made the comments following Hernandez’s double for Bayer against AS Roma in the 4-4 draw in the Champions League Group E at the BayArena on Tuesday evening.

The Mexico international has now scored three goals and created two chances in three Champions League appearances so far this season.

The 27-year-old has found the target once and has created two chances in six Bundesliga matches for Bayer.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham could do with more firepower upfront, and Hernandez would have been a good signing especially as he knows the Premier League inside out.

But would United have sold Hernandez to Arsenal or Tottenham? Probably not.
