Analysis: West Ham's Dimitri Payet totally outclasses Chelsea’s attacking trio of Pedro, Willian and Oscar

West Ham United’s Dimitri Payet has enjoyed an amazing start to the season.

West Ham United's Dimitri Payet heads into his side’s clash with Chelsea boasting a much better record than the champions’ attacking trio of Pedro, Willian and Oscar.

The Hammers shocked Premier League observers in the summer with the acquisition of Payet, a player who notched seven goals and 16 assists as Marseille finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season.

How did West Ham manage to sign such a player? It was a question posed by a number of French journalists, especially considering Marseille’s size and direct Europa League qualification.

Payet’s start to life in East London hasn’t surprised any, with five goals and three assists in nine matches.

Chelsea haven’t started their defence of the Premier League title all too well, and as they prepare for West Ham on Saturday, boss Jose Mourinho must be slightly envious of Payet’s success.

Pedro 1 1 2.57 1.86 2 53.57 27.43 7

As per the table provided by Opta Stats, the France international’s fabulous performances can be illustrated by the fact he outshines Chelsea’s expensive attacking trio.

Aside from scoring and assisting more goals, Payet averages more key passes, successful take-ons and touches per Premier League encounter than his upcoming opponents.

Moreover, he posts more shots per game than Willian and more accurate passes than both Pedro and Willian. In fact, Payet has outshone Willian in every attacking category this season.

Have the Blues trio vastly underachieved, or should Payet’s performances be celebrated?

The answer probably depends on where your allegiance lies, but nobody can deny that West Ham unquestionably made the best attacking signing in the Premier League over the summer.
