Former England under-19 captain Tom Thorpe made his first start since the opening day of the season last night as Rotherham drew with Reading.
Thorpe seized his chance by impressing in a midfield holding role, justifying new manager Neil Redfearn's faith in him.
Redfearn is a manager renowned for his work with young players, having helped Alex Mowatt and Lewis Cook blossom at Leeds United last season.
Thorpe was a player highly regarded at Manchester United, captaining their under-21 side - with central defence seen as his natural position.
Louis van Gaal felt differently, picking the more inexperienced Paddy McNair ahead of him when the Red Devils had an injury crisis last season, and Thorpe was released in the summer.
United's loss could be Rotherham's gain, with Thorpe doing more than enough to suggest he deserves more chances in the first team.
Thorpe completed 90 per cent of his passes in the 1-1 draw with Reading, and made seven tackles, more than any midfielder on the pitch.
His performance clearly won over supporters, who took to Twitter to rave about his display. Here is a look at the reaction...
