Riviere has become something of a forgotten man at St. James' Park, after his awful debut campaign last term, but McClaren has not written off the striker just yet.
The 25-year-old netted just one goal in 23 Premier League appearances last season, but McClaren still feels that he has something to offer the squad.
Unfortunately for Riviere, he has missed the entire season so far with injury, but he is nearing a return to training, with the Chronicle suggesting that he should be back to fitness in three weeks.
When the former Monaco man does come back into the fold, his task will be to force his way back into the team, but doing so could be difficult.
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez appear to be the Magpies' first-choice pairing up front, and their partnership has shown plenty of promise of late.
With Papiss Cisse also in reserve, McClaren has options at his disposal, but Riviere will be looking to prove that he can cut it in the Premier League, in what looks to be a make-or-break season for him.
