Newcastle assistant Simpson says that Sunderland will be favourites for the derby.
The two North Eastern rivals face off at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, and Magpies assistant boss Paul Simpson has admitted to the Chronicle that Sunderland will be favourites for the game considering their recent record in the fixture.
Simpson said: “They’re going to be favourites because they have had five straight wins. We need to change that. We’ve got to go there and deal with the whole occasion properly.”
Sunderland have a great record in recent Tyne-Wear derby matches, with their ability to defeat Newcastle one of the few positives coming from their frequent changing of managers.
Four years have gone by since Newcastle have beaten Sunderland, with the Wearside club winning five games in a row against the Magpies, and the Black Cats head into the game with another new manager in place - taking charge of the derby in what is his second game.
Despite this record, it is a surprise to see Simpson say Sunderland will be favourites for the game, seeing as the Magpies head into the tie on the back of a 6-2 win - whilst Sunderland remain without a win to their name this season.
The Black Cats have lost all their Premier League games this term, and Newcastle should head into the game with momentum and motivation to pick up their second three points of the campaign.
It promises to be another great derby between the two English footballing giants, and Newcastle should fancy their chances of picking up a long awaited win against the Black Cats.
