Jan Vertonghen makes claim about Tottenham Hotspur's defence

Tottenham Hotspur have conceded the joint-fewest goals of any side in the Premier League so far this season.

Jan Vertonghen has told London24 that he believes Tottenham Hotspur have the best defence in the entirety of the Premier League.

Spurs have proven to be a difficult side to break down over the early part of the season, and they are currently unbeaten in their last eight.

The key behind their good form has been the strength of their defensive performances, with no team in England's top-flight conceding fewer goals than Mauricio Pochettino's side.

And Vertonghen said: “In the past we lost a lot of games by conceding two, three or even four goals – and against Liverpool and City five or six - so we had to avoid that and now we’re keeping clean sheets. I think we have one of the best defences in the Premier League and hopefully we can start scoring.

“We always did well against the ‘smaller teams’ and this season we want to show we’re ready to compete for the top places."

As well as having the best defensive record in the Premier League, Spurs also are one of the most prolific tacklers in the division.

Pochettino has encouraged Spurs to press opposition teams quickly, and that is shown by the tackling stats.

Only Sunderland have completed more challenges so far, and that is largely because the Black Cats have been put on the back-foot in matches so regularly.

Tottenham will be hoping to continue to prove so resolute as the season progresses, with their next fixture coming against Bournemouth at the weekend.
