Graphic: Why Mauricio Pochettino should select this Tottenham XI versus Anderlecht

Tottenham WHL

Tottenham Hotspur face Belgian side Anderlecht in the Europa League on Thursday.

Tottenham Hotspur resume European duties on Thursday when they take on Anderlecht in Belgium.

Spurs head into the clash in a good position, having taken four points from a possible six and picking up a point in arguably the most difficult game of the group - Monaco away.

With Spurs set to face newly-promoted Bournemouth away in the Premier League on Sunday, boss Mauricio Pochettino needs to use his squad carefully and should look to make some key changes.

Back five:

Considering that the North Londoners are in a solid position in their Europa League table, changes should be made and there are a number of defensive players who need more games under their belt.

It seems an ideal match to bring in goalkeeper Michel Vorm, while left-back Ben Davies can come in instead of Danny Rose, who is now the more likely of the two to start on Sunday.

Summer signings Kevin Wimmer and Kieran Trippier also need competitive minutes, and with the Premier League prioritised and the League Cup gone, the Europa League is currently their best option.

Midfield:

Spurs trio Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason and Tom Carroll are seemingly still struggling with fitness, therefore Pochettino has three realistic options left for two positions.

Eric Dier is fresh from missing the Liverpool match through suspension, and Mousa Dembele’s excellent performance should prompt Pochettino into giving him another try in a deeper role.

Dier and Dembele have the potential to be a fantastic pairing in the middle.

Attacking quartet:

Heung-Min Son and Nacer Chadli are ruled out through injury, again leaving Pochettino with only a number of realistic options available to choose from.

Clinton N’Jie played well against Liverpool and deserves another shot, whereas Christian Eriksen has a wonderful appetite and energy so he should be more than capable of playing Thursday/Sunday.

Andros Townsend is another who needs games, and resting Erik Lamela ahead of Sunday would be wise.

Harry Kane doesn’t have too much in terms of an alternative at present, yet his inclusion should be a given as Spurs still have some work to do in the Europa League and they will want to win in Belgium.
