Everton midfielder Tom Cleverley returned to action for the club’s under-21s in their Premier League International Cup match against German side Schalke on Tuesday evening and Toffees fans were clearly pleased to have him back.
The 26-year-old signed for Everton on a free transfer during the summer having previously been on the books at Manchester United, but he only managed five appearances for Roberto Martinez’s side before he suffered ankle ligament damage in the 0-0 draw with Tottenham Hotspur back in late August.
Cleverley has been side-lined ever since but he was named in the starting line-up for Everton’s latest under-21 outing and he played 60 minutes against the Bundesliga club’s second-string in what was a fine showing.
When fit and firing Cleverley will be a key player for Everton – just as he was for loan club Aston Villa last season – and Martinez is likely to be pleased with what he saw earlier this week.
After the match we took to Twitter to see what Everton fans thought of Cleverley’s return and you can read a selection of what we found below:
Pienaar and Cleverley both back on pitch is great news. 1st and 2nd choice for LM position for me and will help greatly in months ahead.— Phil Houghton (@philinsuffolk) October 20, 2015
