Tottenham take on Belgian giants Anderlecht on Thursday.
Dennis Praet is set to take on some of his international teammates on Thursday when Anderlecht play Spurs in the Europa League, and, speaking to Eurosport, he has called Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld the best defenders in all of Belgium.
Praet said: “They have the top two Belgian defenders in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.”
It is hard to disagree with Praet’s assessment of Vertonghen and Alderweireld, with the Spurs duo making up a high part of Belgium’s recent success on the international stage.
Despite naturally being central defenders, they play at left-back and right-back respectively for the Red Devils, and it is only with Spurs that the former Ajax men get to show off their talents in the centre of the back-line.
And this season, Vertonghen and Alderweireld have been excellent, with Tottenham’s seven goals conceded in the Premier League the joint lowest in the division.
There are no longer fears that Spurs will suddenly capitulate in the defensive zone when leading games, and this has built belief that the Lilywhites are finally ready to break back into the top four this season.
Success is built upon a strong defence, and for the first time in a number of years, Tottenham have a side that is able to compete with the best in the league with the defenders they can call upon.
