Everton's reserves took on Schalke in the Under-21 Premier League International Cup, and the club utilised the fixture to give some of their returning senior players a chance to regain match fitness.
Tom Cleverley and Steven Pienaar both played in the development contest, but it was Oviedo's performance which had Unsworth purring.
"The massive plusses of the night were to see Tom Cleverley back and playing an hour, Steven Pienaar playing 45 minutes and Bryan Oviedo, whose performance I thought was outstanding," he said. "It was really terrific for those three boys."
Despite putting out a fairly experienced side for the match, Everton were unable to pick up a victory, and fell to a 1-0 defeat.
The fact that all three of their senior players came through the contest unscathed will be the biggest positive, though, as the hope is that they can all play a part for the first-team this season.
Cleverley had made a positive start at Goodison Park prior to his injury, following a summer arrival, while Oviedo and Pienaar have both shown themselves to be valuable assets for Roberto Martinez's side over recent seasons.
When the trio do return, Everton's squad will be improved considerably, and they will be keen to get back to fitness as soon as possible and play their part.
