Alan Smith enthused by Arsenal's defending in Bayern Munich victory

The former forward predicts big things this season if Arsenal can continue to defend like they did against the Germans.

Writing on Twitter, former Arsenal forward Alan Smith was particularly pleased with one aspect of the side’s performance against Bayern Munich: their defending.

The Gunners ran out 2-0 winners in their crucial Champions League clash on Tuesday evening, a result which keeps their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive following losses to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos.

They were particularly solid defensively throughout the game as they managed to limit Bayern’s opportunities, with in-form striker Robert Lewandowski, who has been scoring goals for fun this season, kept particularly quiet.

And Smith was enthused by the defensive display shown by the side, anticipating a big season if they can replicate it.

If Arsenal do seriously harbour any hopes of challenging for the title this season, the defence was always likely to be their weakest point.

While they have numerous options and quality in other areas, the defence has always come in for criticism, with questions over the likes of Per Mertesacker and Nacho Monreal.

However, in recent weeks they have started to look more of a solid unit, and with Petr Cech in goal behind them, have started to look more like an impressive defensive unit.

Keeping out Bayern and Lewandowski in particular is likely to be a huge boost to them, and they will be hoping they can replicate it in their other big games this season.
